An eighteenth-century engraving by Jacob Houbraken after Aert Schouman, depicting portraits of Cornelis de Bruyn, Theodorus Netscher, and Bonaventura van Overbeek.
This engraving, dated 1750, depicts three notable figures from the Dutch cultural sphere: the traveller and artist Cornelis de Bruyn, the painter Theodorus Netscher, and the scholar Bonaventura van Overbeek. The composition is structured as a composite portrait, a common format in eighteenth-century biographical publications. The primary subject, Cornelis de Bruyn, is presented within an oval frame, accompanied by classical architectural elements such as a column and draped fabric, which suggest a sense of academic gravitas.
Below this central portrait, the composition includes smaller, secondary depictions of Netscher and van Overbeek. These are arranged alongside artistic tools, including a quill, inkwell, and drawing implements, which serve to identify the subjects by their professional pursuits. The work was executed by the engraver Jacob Houbraken after a design by Aert Schouman, and it appeared in Jan van Gool's biographical work, 'De Nieuwe Schouburg der Nederlantsche kunstschilders en schilderessen'.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision characteristic of Dutch printmaking during this period. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume in the drapery and depth in the facial features. The inclusion of these specific individuals reflects the interest in documenting the lives and contributions of Dutch artists and intellectuals. By grouping these figures, the print functions as a visual record of the social and professional networks that defined the artistic community in the Netherlands during the eighteenth century. The clarity of the engraving ensures that the individual likenesses remain distinct, while the overall arrangement maintains a balanced, formal aesthetic suitable for a scholarly publication of the era.
