A refined 1729 etching by Philippus Endlich depicting a young William IV, Prince of Orange-Nassau, rendered in a warm, sanguine-toned style.
This etching by the Dutch artist Philippus Endlich depicts William IV, Prince of Orange-Nassau, during his youth. Executed in 1729, the work captures the prince in a contemplative pose, seated with a writing implement in hand. The composition relies on the technique of the sanguine-toned print, which mimics the appearance of red chalk drawings popular in the eighteenth century.
Endlich employs fine, directional hatching to model the facial features and the texture of the subject's clothing. The light source originates from the upper left, casting soft shadows across the prince's face and torso, which provides a sense of volume despite the two-dimensional nature of the print. The background remains relatively simple, allowing the focus to stay on the sitter's expression and posture.
William IV, who would later become the first hereditary Stadtholder of the United Provinces, is presented here without the heavy regalia often associated with royal portraiture of the period. Instead, the artist opts for a more intimate, academic representation. The delicate line work and the monochromatic palette reflect the technical precision required for eighteenth-century printmaking. This piece offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Dutch Republic, where portrait prints served as a means of disseminating the likenesses of political figures to a wider audience. The print is signed and dated by the artist in the lower margin, confirming its provenance and period of production. It remains a clear example of the portraiture traditions that defined the era, prioritising clarity of form and a balanced arrangement of light and shadow.
