A seventeenth-century etching by Johann Alexander Böner, depicting Johann Heinrich Oelgart in a formal portrait style.
This etching by Johann Alexander Böner depicts Johann Heinrich Oelgart within a formal oval frame. The subject is presented in a three-quarter view, characteristic of seventeenth-century portraiture. He wears the long, curled periwig common to the period, paired with a lace cravat and a doublet featuring decorative shoulder detailing. The background includes a draped curtain and a glimpse of a sky, elements that provide a sense of depth and setting to the composition.
Böner employs a range of hatching techniques to define the textures of the subject's clothing and the soft curls of his hair. The lines are precise, reflecting the technical discipline required for copperplate etching during the late Baroque era. The oval frame is set against a rectangular plate, with the subject's initials, J.H.O.C., inscribed clearly beneath the portrait. Handwritten annotations appear in the lower margin, providing additional context regarding the sitter's identity and status.
As a German printmaker active in Nuremberg, Böner produced numerous portraits of contemporary figures, often documenting the appearance of local officials, scholars, and nobility. This work is typical of his output, which prioritised clarity of likeness and formal presentation. The print captures the fashion and social conventions of the late 1600s, offering a window into the visual culture of the time. The contrast between the dark, dense lines of the subject's attire and the lighter, more open work in the background creates a balanced visual weight. This piece is a representative example of the portrait prints that circulated among the educated classes in Europe during the seventeenth century, serving as a record of individual identity through the medium of engraving and etching.
