A detailed mezzotint portrait of the theologian Johann Franz Buddeus, presented within a classical stone frame by the German engraver Christoph Weigel.
This mezzotint by Christoph Weigel depicts the German theologian Johann Franz Buddeus. The portrait follows the conventions of early eighteenth-century academic portraiture, presenting the subject within a trompe l'oeil stone frame. Buddeus is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the traditional clerical attire of the period, including a dark robe and a white collar. His expression is composed, reflecting the intellectual gravity expected of a professor of theology at the University of Jena.
Weigel employs the mezzotint technique to achieve a range of tonal values. The soft transitions between light and shadow define the contours of the face and the texture of the periwig. The oval frame sits atop a plinth, which bears a Latin inscription detailing the subject's name, academic titles, and age. This structural arrangement provides a sense of physical weight and permanence to the image. The background remains dark, ensuring the focus stays on the subject's features.
Christoph Weigel was a prolific engraver and publisher based in Nuremberg. His work often involved the documentation of contemporary figures, scientific subjects, and maps. This print serves as a record of the scholarly class in Germany during the Enlightenment era. The precision of the line work and the careful modulation of tone demonstrate the technical proficiency required for mezzotint production. The print remains a clear example of how portraiture was used to codify the status of academics and clergy in the eighteenth century. It provides a visual link to the intellectual history of the University of Jena, where Buddeus held his position. The composition is balanced and restrained, adhering to the formal requirements of the time while showcasing the capabilities of the printmaking medium.
