A 1943 portrait by Diego Rivera featuring Natasha Gelman reclining amidst a large arrangement of calla lilies.
Diego Rivera painted this portrait of Natasha Zakólkowa Gelman in 1943. Natasha, along with her husband Jacques Gelman, was a significant patron of the arts in Mexico, and the couple amassed a collection of works by Rivera and Frida Kahlo. In this composition, the subject reclines on a dark, upholstered surface, her posture echoing classical traditions of the odalisque. She wears a white gown that contrasts with the deep tones of the furniture and the background.
Rivera surrounds the figure with a profusion of calla lilies. These flowers appear frequently in his oeuvre, often symbolising Mexican identity and the labour of the working class. Here, they function as a decorative element, their white forms creating a rhythmic pattern behind the subject. The artist employs a smooth application of paint, favouring clear outlines and a balanced distribution of light across the figure. The palette remains controlled, focusing on the interplay between the white of the dress and flowers, the dark blue of the seating, and the warm, golden tones of the floor.
This work reflects the artist's ability to integrate portraiture with his interest in botanical motifs. While Rivera is often associated with large-scale public murals, his easel paintings demonstrate a similar attention to form and structure. The portrait captures the social milieu of mid-century Mexico City, where European expatriates and local artists engaged in a shared cultural exchange. The painting remains a clear example of Rivera's technical precision and his approach to representing his subjects within a carefully constructed environment. The focus remains on the physical presence of the sitter, rendered with a sense of calm and poise, while the surrounding lilies provide a sense of scale and visual interest that anchors the composition.
