A refined 1783 portrait by Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, capturing the grace and poise of Catherine Noël Worlee in an elegant oval composition.
This portrait depicts Catherine Noël Worlee, later known as Madame Grand and subsequently the Princesse de Talleyrand. Painted by Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun in 1783, the work captures the subject during her youth in Paris. The artist employs a soft, painterly technique to render the textures of the sitter's gown and the delicate ribbons in her hair. The composition is oval, a format frequently utilised by Vigée Le Brun to focus attention on the sitter's facial expression and posture.
Madame Grand is shown holding a small book, a common attribute in eighteenth-century portraiture intended to suggest intellectual engagement or leisure. Her gaze is directed slightly upwards and away from the viewer, creating a sense of contemplative distance. The lighting is focused on her face and décolletage, while the background remains dark and indistinct, allowing the figure to emerge from the shadows. This use of chiaroscuro draws upon the traditions of earlier European portraiture while maintaining the lightness and grace associated with the French Rococo period.
Vigée Le Brun was highly regarded for her ability to capture the likeness and personality of her subjects. Her work often featured a degree of informality that departed from the rigid conventions of formal court portraiture. In this instance, the loose arrangement of the hair and the relaxed pose contribute to an impression of natural elegance. The blue ribbons provide a subtle colour contrast against the neutral tones of the dress and the dark backdrop. This piece remains a representative example of the artist's technical skill and her approach to portraiture during the final years of the Ancien Régime.
