A formal seventeenth-century portrait engraving of Joannes Ferdinandus de Beughem, Bishop of Antwerp, presented within an architectural frame.
This print by Frans Ertinger depicts Joannes Ferdinandus de Beughem, the ninth Bishop of Antwerp. The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century ecclesiastical portraiture, presenting the subject within a trompe-l'oeil architectural frame. The bishop is positioned inside an oval aperture, his gaze directed toward the viewer with a calm, authoritative expression. He wears clerical vestments, including a mozzetta trimmed with fur, and holds a small crucifix in his right hand. The technical execution demonstrates the precision typical of Ertinger, a Flemish engraver known for his work in Antwerp during the late Baroque period.
Below the portrait, the artist includes a stone-like plinth adorned with a coat of arms and a cartouche containing a Latin inscription. The inscription identifies the sitter and his ecclesiastical office, adding a formal, commemorative quality to the work. The use of varied line weights and cross-hatching creates a sense of volume in the drapery and depth in the architectural surroundings. The lighting is focused on the face and hands of the bishop, drawing attention to his features while the surrounding frame remains in shadow. This print serves as a record of the visual culture surrounding the high clergy in the Spanish Netherlands. The inclusion of heraldic elements and the formalised pose reflect the status of the sitter within the church hierarchy of the era. The work is a characteristic example of the printmaking traditions that flourished in Antwerp, where engravers often collaborated with painters to disseminate portraits of public figures through reproductive prints.
