A formal nineteenth-century portrait of Governor-General Jean Chrétien Baud, painted by the Indonesian artist Raden Saleh in a refined Romantic style.
This portrait depicts Jean Chrétien Baud, who served as the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1833 to 1835. Painted by the Indonesian artist Raden Saleh, the work reflects the formal conventions of European portraiture during the nineteenth century. Saleh, who spent significant time in Europe, adopted the techniques of the Romantic era to capture the status and authority of colonial administrators.
Baud is shown seated in a formal chair, wearing an elaborate dark green coat adorned with gold embroidery and the insignia of a high-ranking official. His posture is composed, with one hand resting on his lap and the other holding a document, suggesting his administrative responsibilities. The artist employs a muted colour palette, allowing the gold details of the uniform to catch the light. Behind the subject, a heavy red curtain provides a dramatic backdrop, while a large stone urn sits to the left. Through the opening, a distant view of a tropical landscape is visible, hinting at the colonial setting of the Dutch East Indies.
Raden Saleh was a pioneer in bringing Western painting techniques to Indonesia. His ability to master the academic style of the period allowed him to move within European aristocratic circles. This portrait demonstrates his technical proficiency in rendering textures, from the soft lace at the subject's neck to the metallic sheen of the embroidery. The composition follows traditional portrait structures, placing the subject at the centre to command the viewer's attention. The work remains a historical record of the colonial administration, captured through the lens of an artist who bridged two distinct cultural worlds.
