A detailed stipple engraving of the astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi, created by Italian printmaker Benedetto Bordiga in the early nineteenth century.
This stipple engraving by Benedetto Bordiga depicts the Italian astronomer and mathematician Giuseppe Piazzi (1746-1826). Piazzi is best known for his discovery of Ceres, the first dwarf planet, in 1801. The portrait captures the subject in a formal, clerical habit, reflecting his status as a Theatine monk.
Bordiga employs the stipple technique, a method involving the application of small dots to create tonal variation and texture. This approach allows for a soft, painterly quality in the modelling of the face, contrasting with the precise, linear definition of the features. The oval composition is a common format for portraiture of the period, focusing the viewer's attention on the sitter's expression. A subtle detail included in the upper right corner of the oval frame is a representation of a celestial body, likely referencing Piazzi's astronomical achievements.
As a printmaker, Bordiga was active in Milan, producing works that documented the intellectual figures of his time. This portrait serves as a record of Piazzi's appearance during the period of his most significant scientific contributions. The print demonstrates the technical skill required for stipple engraving, where the density of the dots dictates the depth of shadow and the clarity of the highlights. The work is presented on paper with a neutral tone, consistent with early nineteenth-century printing practices. It provides a clear view of the subject's features, rendered with a degree of naturalism that was typical of portrait prints intended for scientific or biographical publications. The composition is balanced, with the subject positioned centrally, maintaining a direct gaze that engages the viewer.
