A refined aquatint portrait of Eugène de Beauharnais, Viceroy of Italy, by the French engraver Pierre Michel Alix.
This portrait depicts Eugène de Beauharnais, the stepson of Napoleon Bonaparte and Viceroy of Italy. Pierre Michel Alix, a skilled French engraver, produced this work using the aquatint technique, which allows for subtle tonal gradations and a painterly quality. The print captures the subject in his official capacity, wearing the formal attire associated with the Napoleonic court. His deep blue coat is adorned with the characteristic golden bees, a symbol adopted by the Emperor, while the white silk cravat and high collar reflect the fashion of the early nineteenth century. The red sash and the intricate embroidery on his lapels indicate his high rank within the French Empire.
Alix was known for his ability to translate oil paintings into print form with precision. This specific work demonstrates his technical control over the aquatint process, particularly in the rendering of the soft shadows across the face and the texture of the fabric. The composition is formal and balanced, typical of the Neoclassical period, which favoured clarity and order. The subject is presented against a dark, neutral background, which directs the viewer's attention to his features and the decorative elements of his uniform. The inclusion of the official title below the image identifies him as the Arch-Chancellor of State and Viceroy of Italy, providing historical context for his role in the Napoleonic administration. This print serves as a record of the visual language used to project authority and status during the First French Empire. The delicate application of colour enhances the details of the embroidery and the subtle hues of the subject's complexion, making it a fine example of early nineteenth-century printmaking techniques.
