A refined 1793 portrait by Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, capturing Baron Grigory Alexandrovich Stroganoff in velvet and fur.
Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun painted this portrait of Baron Grigory Alexandrovich Stroganoff in 1793. The work dates to the artist's period of exile from France, during which she travelled extensively across Europe and eventually settled in Saint Petersburg. Her ability to capture the likeness and character of the European aristocracy allowed her to maintain a successful career while away from the French court.
The Baron is depicted in a three-quarter view, set against a neutral, atmospheric background that directs attention to his features and attire. He wears a mustard-coloured waistcoat beneath a deep red velvet coat, which is trimmed with dark fur. The texture of the fur and the sheen of the velvet demonstrate the artist's technical skill in rendering fabric and material surfaces. His pose, with one hand tucked into his waistcoat, conveys a sense of relaxed confidence typical of the period's portraiture.
Vigée Le Brun employs a soft, diffused light that models the Baron's face, creating a gentle transition between shadow and highlight. The composition is contained within an oval frame, a common format for intimate portraiture of the late eighteenth century. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the treatment of the facial features and the crisp white cravat at his neck. This portrait remains a clear example of the artist's refined approach to portraiture, which balanced formal elegance with a naturalistic observation of the sitter. The work reflects the cosmopolitan nature of the Russian nobility during the late eighteenth century, who frequently commissioned portraits from visiting European artists to document their status and personal style.
