A masterful 1919 etching by Swedish artist Anders Zorn, depicting a musician named Ols Maria with characteristic fluid lines and dramatic light.
Anders Zorn, a Swedish master of the etching medium, produced this portrait of Ols Maria in 1919. Zorn is recognised for his ability to capture light and texture through the economy of line. In this work, the subject is depicted playing a stringed instrument, her expression caught in a moment of concentration. The background remains largely obscured, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the figure and the physical act of music-making.
Zorn utilised a technique of rapid, directional hatching to model the form of the sitter and the contours of the instrument. The lines vary in density, creating a sense of depth and shadow that defines the volume of the figure against the dark, atmospheric space. His approach to printmaking often involved a directness that mirrored his oil painting practice, prioritising the immediate impression of the subject over excessive detail. The hands, in particular, are rendered with a characteristic sureness, demonstrating his technical command over the copper plate.
Ols Maria appears in traditional attire, a subject matter that Zorn frequently returned to throughout his career. By documenting the people of his native Dalarna, he created a visual record of local customs and individuals. This etching is a representative example of his late period, where his style became increasingly fluid and expressive. The print captures a quiet, human moment, stripped of artifice. It serves as a study of both the musician and the light that falls across her features, demonstrating the capacity of the etched line to convey mood and presence. The work is a clear example of Zorn's mature style, where the interplay between light and shadow dictates the composition, ensuring that the viewer's attention is directed towards the subject's face and the instrument she holds.
