A detailed depiction of the biblical narrative of Noah and his ark, rendered with the anatomical precision characteristic of Charles Willson Peale.
This composition depicts the biblical narrative of Noah, positioned in the foreground as he kneels in prayer. A beam of light descends from the heavens, illuminating his figure and the surrounding animals. Behind him, the ark is rendered as a large, wooden structure, while a diverse array of creatures, including an elephant, a tiger, and various birds, gather in the vicinity. The work is based on an earlier painting by the British artist Charles Catton the Younger.
Charles Willson Peale, a polymath and founder of the first major museum in the United States, possessed a keen interest in natural history. His approach to this subject reflects his scientific curiosity, as the animals are depicted with a level of anatomical detail that suggests a study of specimens. The composition balances the dramatic, spiritual elements of the narrative with the empirical observation characteristic of Peale's broader body of work. The lighting creates a clear separation between the divine intervention and the physical world, directing the viewer's attention toward the central figure of Noah.
Peale's execution demonstrates the influence of European academic traditions, particularly in the handling of the figures and the structured arrangement of the animals. The inclusion of exotic species alongside domestic ones serves to emphasise the scale of the biblical event. The palette remains grounded in natural tones, with the exception of the celestial light which provides a sharp contrast to the darker, more muted colours of the ark and the surrounding environment. This print captures the narrative clarity and the meticulous attention to detail that defined Peale's later career, offering a view into the intersection of early American art and the burgeoning field of natural history.
