A striking black and white woodcut by Paul Gauguin, created during his first stay in Tahiti, featuring bold graphic lines and symbolic imagery.
This woodcut, titled Noa Noa, originates from Paul Gauguin's first period in Tahiti. The title translates from Tahitian to mean fragrant or scented. Gauguin produced this work as part of a series of prints intended to illustrate his travelogue of the same name. The composition reflects his interest in the primitive aesthetic, moving away from European academic traditions toward a more direct, graphic style.
The image features a central figure carrying a staff, accompanied by a small animal, set against a backdrop of local flora and a secondary figure. Gauguin utilised the woodcut medium to create stark contrasts between black and white areas. He carved the block with deliberate, rough marks, which remain visible in the final print. This technique emphasises the texture of the wood and the physical act of carving. The upper section contains a cloud-like form enclosing the title, with smaller figures and motifs contained within.
Gauguin's approach to the woodcut was experimental. He often worked the blocks with unconventional tools, including chisels and knives, to achieve specific tonal effects. The resulting prints possess a raw, unrefined quality that aligns with his desire to capture the spirit of the environment he encountered in the South Pacific. The figures are stylised, with flattened forms that reject traditional perspective. This print demonstrates his departure from the naturalism of his earlier career, favouring symbolic representation and bold, simplified shapes. The work provides insight into his creative process during his time in Tahiti, where he sought to reconcile his European background with the visual language of the islands. It remains a significant example of his graphic output, demonstrating his ability to adapt traditional printmaking methods to his personal artistic vision.
