A portrait by Charles Willson Peale depicting Elizabeth Coultas Gray Leiper and her daughter, Helen, rendered in oil on canvas.
Charles Willson Peale, a central figure in American portraiture during the late eighteenth century, produced this work depicting Elizabeth Coultas Gray Leiper alongside her daughter, Helen Hamilton Leiper. The composition follows the conventions of the era, focusing on the domestic bond between mother and child. Peale employs a soft, diffused light that models the figures, drawing attention to the textures of the clothing and the expressions of the subjects.
The mother is dressed in a mauve gown with a light, translucent shawl draped over her shoulders, while her hair is styled in a voluminous fashion typical of the period. Her daughter, Helen, is depicted in a simple white dress, her gaze directed towards the viewer with a directness that balances the mother's more reserved demeanour. The background is a dark, atmospheric wash, which serves to push the figures forward and creates a sense of depth without the need for architectural or exterior detail.
Peale was known for his ability to capture the likeness of the American elite, and this portrait reflects his technical approach to oil painting. His brushwork is controlled, allowing for the smooth transitions in skin tone and the subtle rendering of fabric folds. The painting remains a clear example of the portraiture style favoured by the merchant class in Philadelphia during the post-Revolutionary period. It avoids excessive ornamentation, opting instead for a focus on the psychological presence of the sitters. The work provides a glimpse into the social history of the time, documenting the appearance and status of the Leiper family through the lens of a painter who was instrumental in documenting the early years of the United States.
