A detailed pen-and-ink architectural sketch by George Chinnery, documenting a mosque in Dacca during his time in India.
George Chinnery, a British painter who spent much of his career in India and China, produced this sketch during his residency in Dacca (modern-day Dhaka). The work captures a specific architectural site with the precision of an artist trained in the topographical traditions of the late eighteenth century. Chinnery employs a fluid pen-and-ink technique to delineate the structure of the mosque, balancing the formal geometry of the domes and minarets against the more organic, informal elements of the foreground.
The composition contrasts the solid, elevated masonry of the mosque with the thatched, temporary structures situated at the street level. This juxtaposition provides a view into the urban environment of the period, where grand historical architecture existed alongside the daily activities of the local population. Chinnery often included such observational details in his sketchbooks, which served as both personal records and source material for his larger oil paintings. The inclusion of a compass rose in the upper right corner indicates the artist's methodical approach to documenting his surroundings, a common practice for travellers and artists working in the East India Company territories.
His line work is economical, using hatching to suggest shadow and texture without overworking the paper surface. The sketch remains a clear example of the documentary impulse that defined much of the British artistic output in South Asia during the early nineteenth century. By focusing on the interplay between light and structure, Chinnery provides a direct, unadorned view of the site. This print preserves the immediacy of the original drawing, allowing for a close examination of the artist's hand and his observational process.
