A nocturnal study by Giuseppe Bernardino Bison, capturing a monumental equestrian statue in a moonlit garden through expressive pen and gouache work.
Giuseppe Bernardino Bison was a prolific draughtsman and painter, known for his ability to construct imaginative architectural scenes, or capricci. This work demonstrates his command of light and shadow, utilising the natural tone of the grey paper as a mid-tone to build depth. By applying white gouache highlights, Bison creates a nocturnal atmosphere, suggesting the cool, silvery glow of moonlight reflecting off stone surfaces and the surrounding foliage.
The composition features a monumental equestrian statue positioned on a raised plinth, balanced by a secondary sculptural group to the left. Between these figures, a large, ornate vessel emits a faint, ethereal light, perhaps a brazier or a decorative garden feature. The inclusion of small, silhouetted figures in the foreground provides a sense of scale, emphasising the imposing nature of the statuary. Bison's technique here is fluid, with rapid, calligraphic pen strokes defining the forms of the horse and the architectural elements.
Bison spent much of his career in Venice and Trieste, where he absorbed the influence of eighteenth-century Venetian masters. His drawings often display a theatrical quality, reflecting his experience in stage design. This particular study captures a moment of quiet stillness, typical of his interest in the interplay between classical antiquity and the romanticised garden setting. The work is not a literal depiction of a specific site, but rather a constructed scene designed to evoke a particular mood. The economy of line and the strategic use of wash and heightening reveal the artist's technical proficiency and his focus on atmospheric effects over rigid topographical accuracy. This print preserves the delicate tonal transitions of the original drawing, offering a clear view into the artist's process and his vision of an idealised, moonlit environment.
