A woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicting a traveller and pack horse at Mitsuke, from his series on the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene at Mitsuke, one of the stations along the Tokaido road. The composition focuses on a traveller accompanied by a pack horse, capturing a moment of rest or preparation during a journey. Hokusai employs a clear, graphic style, using defined outlines and a controlled colour palette to delineate the figures and their surroundings.
The print belongs to a series documenting the route between Edo and Kyoto. Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, Hokusai's interpretation of the Tokaido stations often leans into a more compact, illustrative approach. The figure of the traveller, holding a long staff, stands beside a horse laden with goods, rendered with attention to the textures of the pack and the animal's form. The background features stylised trees and a winding watercourse, elements that provide a sense of place without overwhelming the primary subjects.
Hokusai's mastery of the woodblock medium is evident in the precise registration of the colours and the economy of line. The print reflects the cultural interest in travel and regional geography that permeated Edo-period Japan. By documenting the mundane aspects of transit, such as the gear of a traveller or the posture of a pack animal, the artist provides a glimpse into the daily life of the period. The work is a fine example of the genre, demonstrating the technical skill required to produce multi-block prints during the early nineteenth century. It remains a clear representation of the artist's ability to balance narrative detail with compositional clarity, offering a view into the historical travel culture of Japan.
