A detailed etching by Francesco Faraone Aquila depicting the Miracle of Bolsena, capturing the narrative through precise line work and architectural framing.
This print by Francesco Faraone Aquila depicts the Miracle of Bolsena, a subject famously rendered by Raphael in the Vatican Stanze. Aquila, an Italian engraver active in Rome during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, produced this work to document the narrative of the 1263 miracle. The scene captures the moment a doubting priest witnesses blood dripping from the consecrated host onto the corporal during Mass.
The composition is structured within a grand architectural arch, reflecting the spatial logic of the original fresco. Aquila employs precise line work to delineate the figures, the altar, and the surrounding ecclesiastical observers. The priest stands at the centre, his posture conveying a mixture of shock and reverence, while the congregation on the left and the kneeling figures on the right provide a sense of scale and emotional reaction. The lower portion of the print incorporates decorative panels and Latin inscriptions, which serve to frame the narrative and provide historical context for the viewer.
Technically, the print demonstrates the mastery of copperplate engraving common to the period. Aquila uses varying densities of cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, particularly within the vaulted ceiling and the folds of the liturgical vestments. The perspective is carefully managed to guide the eye toward the altar, where the miracle occurs. This work functions as a record of high Renaissance composition translated into the medium of print, allowing for the wider dissemination of the Vatican imagery. The attention to architectural detail and the balanced arrangement of the figures reflect the formal rigour of the Roman school. As a piece of historical documentation, it preserves the visual language of the period, offering a clear view of the theological and artistic priorities of the time.
