A powerful 1919 woodcut by Ernst Barlach, depicting the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan through bold, expressive lines and stark contrast.
Ernst Barlach, a central figure in German Expressionism, produced this woodcut in 1919. The work depicts the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan, a theme that occupied the artist during the aftermath of the First World War. Barlach utilised the woodcut medium to create stark, high-contrast imagery that reflects the emotional weight of the subject matter. The composition focuses on the physical interaction between the two figures, with the Samaritan cradling the injured man in a gesture of protection and care.
The visual language of the print is defined by bold, angular lines and a simplified, almost sculptural treatment of the human form. Barlach avoided fine detail in favour of expressive, rhythmic gouges in the wood block, which create a sense of movement and tension within the frame. The background is composed of agitated, horizontal striations that suggest a turbulent environment, contrasting with the central act of mercy. This approach is characteristic of Barlach's graphic work, where the physical resistance of the wood informs the final aesthetic result.
Barlach's work often explored themes of human suffering, empathy, and spiritual struggle. By stripping the narrative down to its essential components, he directed the viewer's attention to the raw humanity of the scene. The heavy black ink against the white paper creates a graphic intensity that remains direct and unadorned. This print is a clear example of the artist's ability to convey complex emotional states through minimal visual means, avoiding sentimentality in favour of a grounded, tactile representation of compassion.
