Beskrivning
A surrealist composition by René Magritte featuring three lit candles resting horizontally on a dark, nocturnal beach.
René Magritte, a central figure in the Belgian Surrealist movement, produced Méditation in 1936. The work presents a characteristic juxtaposition of disparate elements, a technique the artist employed to disrupt conventional perception. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: a deep, nocturnal sea under a dark blue sky, and a sandy shore in the foreground.
Three lit candles lie horizontally upon the sand. Their placement is illogical, as candles typically stand upright to function. The flames burn steadily, casting a soft, warm glow against the surrounding darkness of the beach. This image creates a sense of quiet isolation. Magritte often used common objects to question the nature of reality, and here, the displacement of the candles from their expected vertical orientation forces the viewer to reconsider the physical properties of the objects themselves.
Magritte avoided the emotional intensity often associated with other Surrealist painters. Instead, he favoured a clean, precise style that allowed the conceptual strangeness of his subjects to take precedence. The smooth application of paint and the lack of visible brushwork contribute to the dreamlike quality of the scene. By placing these domestic items in a vast, empty coastal setting, Magritte invites contemplation on the nature of existence and the arbitrary rules we apply to the physical world. The contrast between the cool, expansive blue of the sea and the small, flickering warmth of the candles provides a visual anchor for the viewer. This piece remains a clear example of the artist's ability to transform mundane reality into a scene of mystery through simple, calculated alterations.

Méditation - René Magritte
Artist Biography
Rene Magritte
He grew up in Lessines, Belgium. His mother drowned herself in the River Sambre when he was thirteen; her body was found with her nightdress wrapped around her face. Whether this explains the recurring covered faces in his paintings is a question biographers have insisted on and Magritte consistently refused to answer.
He studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and spent several years working as a commercial artist and wallpaper designer. The commercial work is relevant: his painting technique is deliberately flat, illustrative, and impersonal. There are no visible brushstrokes, no evidence of struggle. The surfaces look like advertisements for impossible things. He painted in a small room in his house, wearing a suit, with his easel next to the living room furniture.
He was a Surrealist but not the Parisian variety. He disliked Breton's intellectualising and preferred to work from home in Brussels. His version of Surrealism was cooler and more logical: ordinary objects placed in wrong contexts, familiar things made strange through simple displacement. A rock floating in the sky. An apple covering a face. A train emerging from a fireplace. Each painting poses a single visual problem and leaves you to solve it.
He made relatively few paintings compared to his contemporaries. Each one is self-contained. He did not develop through phases or wrestle with form. He found his approach early and refined it quietly for decades.
