A detailed Neoclassical etching by Jean Charles Delafosse featuring an allegorical medallion of Truth surrounded by symbolic objects.
This etching by Jean Charles Delafosse presents a highly structured allegorical composition. At its centre, a circular medallion depicts the personification of Truth, represented as a female figure holding a flaming torch against a rising sun. This central motif is framed by a laurel wreath, a classic symbol of victory and honour. The medallion is set against a larger, elaborate architectural cartouche, typical of Delafosse's work as an architect and designer of decorative arts.
Surrounding the central medallion are various symbolic objects. To the left, a pair of scales and a sword are entwined with a serpent, traditional attributes associated with justice and wisdom. To the right, a theatrical mask rests near a stack of books, suggesting the duality of performance and knowledge. The entire arrangement is topped by a heavy, classical urn adorned with a bucranium, reinforcing the Neoclassical aesthetic that dominated French design during the late eighteenth century.
Delafosse was a prolific designer whose work often appeared in pattern books intended for craftsmen and architects. His style is characterised by a rigorous attention to detail and a preference for heavy, sculptural forms. The etching demonstrates his ability to combine disparate symbolic elements into a cohesive, balanced design. The line work is precise, using hatching and cross-hatching to define the volume of the objects and the texture of the stone-like cartouche. This print serves as a representative example of the decorative vocabulary used in the period, where classical motifs were repurposed to convey moral and intellectual themes. The inclusion of the word 'Vérité' at the base confirms the allegorical intent of the piece, grounding the ornamental display in a clear conceptual framework.
