Beskrivning
A 1914 Expressionist watercolour by Heinrich Campendonk, depicting the Annunciation through a dreamlike, folk-inspired lens with symbolic figures and animals.
Heinrich Campendonk, a member of the Der Blaue Reiter group, produced this work in 1914. The composition depicts the Annunciation through a lens of folk-inspired Expressionism. Campendonk rejects traditional religious iconography, opting instead for a dreamlike, symbolic arrangement of figures and animals. The central figure of the Virgin is rendered with a distinct blue face, a recurring motif in his work that suggests a spiritual or otherworldly state. She sits amidst a collection of creatures, including a large ox and smaller sheep, which evoke the nativity scene while simultaneously grounding the image in a pastoral, almost mystical, setting.
The application of watercolour and gouache creates a soft, atmospheric quality. The colours are applied with a degree of transparency, allowing the paper to show through in areas, which contributes to the ethereal nature of the scene. Geometric stars and a sweeping yellow arc occupy the upper portion of the composition, providing a celestial counterpoint to the earthly figures below. The figures themselves are elongated and simplified, reflecting the artist's interest in primitive art and the reduction of form to its essential components.
Campendonk's approach to the subject is personal and idiosyncratic. He avoids the rigid perspective of earlier religious art, preferring a flattened, decorative space where the boundaries between the human, animal, and divine realms are porous. The work demonstrates his ability to synthesise modern artistic concerns with a sense of wonder and narrative simplicity. By placing the Annunciation within this quiet, populated space, he shifts the focus from the dramatic event itself to the internal, contemplative experience of the subject. The result is a composition that feels both intimate and expansive, characteristic of the experimental spirit prevalent in the Munich art scene during the early twentieth century.
