A fine seventeenth-century etching by Domenico Maria Canuti, depicting the Madonna and Child in a classic Baroque style.
This etching by the Bolognese master Domenico Maria Canuti depicts the Madonna and Child, a subject central to the religious iconography of the seventeenth century. Canuti, a pupil of Guido Reni, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of delicate, rhythmic hatching to define the forms of the figures and the surrounding clouds. The composition follows the traditional Baroque arrangement, with the Virgin Mary seated upon a cloud bank, elevated above a distant, schematic cityscape. The Christ Child, positioned to her side, gestures upwards while holding a small floral sprig, and the Virgin holds a rosary, from which the work derives its title.
The print exhibits the characteristic fluidity of Canuti's draughtsmanship. His lines are calligraphic and expressive, creating a sense of movement in the drapery and the swirling clouds that cradle the figures. The light source is implied by the radiant halo surrounding the Virgin, which provides a soft contrast to the darker, more densely worked areas of the clouds. Below the main image, the print includes a formal dedication, typical of the period, which identifies the patron and the specific religious context of the work in Bologna.
As a representative example of Italian Baroque printmaking, this piece offers insight into the devotional practices and artistic priorities of the era. The focus remains on the grace and poise of the figures, rendered with a balance between anatomical precision and idealised beauty. The etching process allows for a clarity of detail that captures the subtle textures of the fabric and the soft features of the faces. This museum-grade print preserves the tonal nuances of the original plate, providing a clear view of Canuti's approach to light and shadow in a medium that was essential for the dissemination of religious imagery during the seventeenth century.
