A serene High Renaissance devotional scene by Francesco Francia, featuring the Madonna and Child alongside Saint Jerome.
This composition by Francesco Francia, a master of the Bolognese school, presents a devotional scene typical of the early sixteenth century. The artist, originally a goldsmith, brings a precise, clean quality to the painted surface. The figures of the Madonna and the Christ Child occupy the foreground, rendered with smooth transitions of light and shadow that define their features. The Madonna displays a calm, introspective expression, while the Child gestures with a small hand, a common motif in religious iconography of the period.
To the left, the bearded figure of Saint Jerome is identifiable by his traditional appearance, providing a counterpoint to the youthful, serene visage of the Virgin. The background features a distant, atmospheric view of a fortified town nestled against rolling hills, a characteristic element of the period's interest in integrating human subjects with the natural world. The colour palette relies on the contrast between the deep blue of the Madonna's mantle, the warmth of her red tunic, and the muted tones of the distant horizon.
Francia was highly regarded during his lifetime for his ability to balance clarity of form with a gentle, humanised approach to sacred subjects. His work reflects the influence of Perugino and the broader stylistic shifts occurring in Italy at the time. The painting demonstrates a mastery of oil techniques, allowing for the subtle blending of skin tones and the delicate depiction of the transparent veil worn by the Virgin. This print captures the technical precision of the original panel, preserving the soft modelling of the faces and the quiet dignity of the figures. It is a representative example of the devotional art produced for private patrons in Bologna during the High Renaissance.
