A refined 1789 Neoclassical engraving by Jean Jacques François Le Barbier, depicting the characters Lycidas and Myrson in a pastoral setting.
This engraving, dated 1789, depicts a scene featuring the characters Lycidas and Myrson. The work is a fine example of late eighteenth-century French book illustration, a period when the collaboration between draughtsmen and engravers reached a high level of technical precision. Jean Jacques François Le Barbier, known as Le Barbier l'aîné, provided the design, while the execution of the plate was carried out by L.M. Halbou.
The composition follows the conventions of Neoclassical pastoral art. Two figures are seated upon rocks beside a waterfall, their poses reflecting the calm, contemplative nature of the literary source material. The drapery of their garments is rendered with careful attention to the fall of light and shadow, a hallmark of the period's academic training. The surrounding environment, featuring craggy rock formations and foliage, provides a structured backdrop that frames the figures without overwhelming them. The inclusion of a decorative border and a cartouche containing the French text, 'Cette agréable fraicheur me fait tressaillir', indicates its original purpose as a plate within a published volume.
The technique employed here relies on a system of fine lines and cross-hatching to create tonal depth. The engraver has managed to differentiate the textures of the stone, the water, and the fabric through varied line weights and densities. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the pre-Revolutionary era, where classical themes and pastoral narratives were frequently utilised to provide a sense of order and refinement. The work remains a clear record of the collaborative process between artist and printmaker, capturing a moment of quiet interaction within a natural setting. It is a representative piece of the era's dedication to clarity, balance, and the integration of text with visual narrative.
