A refined eighteenth-century French etching by Nicolas Ponce, depicting a domestic genre scene within an ornate circular frame.
This etching and engraving, titled Le Verre d'Eau, is a characteristic example of the late eighteenth-century French printmaking tradition. Nicolas Ponce, a skilled engraver and publisher, produced this work during a period when erotic genre scenes were popular among the Parisian elite. The composition depicts a domestic interior where two attendants remove bedclothes from a partially undressed woman. The scene is contained within a circular frame, which is surrounded by decorative floral swags and architectural motifs typical of the Rococo aesthetic.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision of the burin and etching needle. Ponce employs varied line weights to distinguish between the soft textures of the bed linens, the drapery of the clothing, and the smooth contours of the human form. The shading is achieved through fine cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume and depth within the confined oval space. The surrounding frame provides a structured contrast to the fluid, dynamic movement of the figures within the bed.
As a publisher, Ponce often collaborated with contemporary artists to translate paintings into prints for a wider audience. This specific work reflects the lighthearted, often suggestive themes that defined the period. The inclusion of the title at the base, along with the publisher's address, indicates its intended circulation as a commercial print. The work provides insight into the visual culture of pre-revolutionary France, where such scenes were collected for their technical refinement and thematic playfulness. The balanced composition and the attention to decorative detail reflect the broader artistic priorities of the era, where the boundary between fine art and interior ornamentation was frequently blurred.
