Landscapes of the Twelve Months - Gong Xian

Gong Xian, a member of the Eight Masters of Nanjing, produced this work during the early Qing dynasty. His technique relies on repeated layers of ink wash, which creates a dense, atmospheric quality. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured light, airy brushwork, Gong Xian built his forms through a methodical application of ink dots and strokes. This process results in a distinct sense of weight and volume within the composition.

The artist uses a restricted palette of ink tones to define the spatial relationships between the foreground rocks and the distant peaks.
