A serene 18th-century Chinese ink painting by Yuan Yao, depicting a quiet lakeside scene after autumn rain.
Yuan Yao was a prominent painter during the mid-Qing Dynasty, active in Yangzhou. He belonged to a family of artists, including his uncle Yuan Jiang, and gained recognition for his technical precision in depicting architectural structures and natural environments. This work, dated to 1767, reflects the stylistic conventions of the period, where artists balanced meticulous detail with atmospheric effects.
The composition presents a serene view of a lake bordered by rolling hills and dense vegetation. A narrow path winds through the foreground, leading the eye toward a small cluster of buildings nestled near the water. The artist employs a range of ink washes to suggest the damp, heavy atmosphere that follows rainfall. The trees are rendered with careful brushwork, showing individual foliage patterns that contrast with the softer, blurred forms of the distant mountains. A small pavilion sits quietly in the lower right, providing a sense of human scale within the vast, quiet environment.
Yuan Yao often combined the traditional blue-and-green style with more contemporary ink techniques. His work is noted for its clarity and structural integrity. In this piece, the use of negative space across the water creates a sense of openness, while the darker, textured ink of the trees and rocks anchors the composition. The painting serves as a study of light and moisture, capturing a specific moment of transition in the natural world. The inclusion of figures on a bridge adds a subtle narrative element, suggesting the daily life that continues despite the quietude of the surroundings. This print captures the tonal variations of the original silk, preserving the delicate balance between the sharp, defined lines of the architecture and the fluid, organic forms of the terrain.
