A fluid, atmospheric watercolour of Venetian mooring posts by Neo-Impressionist Henri-Edmond Cross, capturing the light and colour of the city.
Henri-Edmond Cross, a central figure in the development of Neo-Impressionism, produced this watercolour during his travels to Venice. Unlike his more rigorous pointillist oil paintings, this work demonstrates a fluid, spontaneous approach to the medium. The composition focuses on the mooring posts, or briccole, which punctuate the water with verticality. Cross uses a limited palette, allowing the deep blue of the posts to contrast against the warm, pale ochre tones of the Venetian architecture and the surrounding water.
The application of paint is light and washes are applied with economy. Cross captures the shimmering quality of the Venetian light through simple, suggestive marks rather than detailed rendering. The reflections in the water are indicated by loose, vertical strokes that echo the form of the posts above. This piece provides insight into the artist's private practice, where he experimented with colour relationships and simplified forms away from the systematic application of dots found in his larger exhibition works.
Venice held a particular fascination for artists of this period, who were drawn to its unique atmospheric conditions and historical architecture. Cross visited the city on several occasions, and these watercolours represent a more intimate engagement with the subject. The work is unsigned in the traditional sense, though it bears the hallmarks of his hand in the handling of the blue pigment and the structural arrangement of the scene. It remains a clear example of how the artist translated his interest in light and colour into a more immediate, gestural format. The paper support is visible throughout, acting as a neutral tone that unifies the composition and maintains the lightness of the scene.
