A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting travellers and a pack horse at the Kusatsu post station on the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the post station of Kusatsu, a stop on the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. The scene captures the daily activity of travellers navigating the route, with a horse and its handler positioned near a prominent sign advertising 'Wachusan', a medicinal product associated with the town. Hokusai employs a balanced composition, placing the figures and the animal in the foreground while suggesting the wider geography of the region through simplified forms and clear outlines.
The print reflects the conventions of early nineteenth-century Ukiyo-e, where the focus often shifted toward the experiences of common people and the specific characteristics of local sites. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The use of line is precise, typical of the artist's approach to woodblock production, where clarity of form was essential for the printing process. The inclusion of the sign for the local medicine provides a specific cultural marker, grounding the image in the commercial reality of the Tokaido road.
Unlike the later, more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, Hokusai's interpretation of the Tokaido stations often features a more compact arrangement of elements. The figures are rendered with a focus on their posture and attire, conveying the weariness and routine of long-distance travel. The background elements, such as the distant hills and the winding path, are treated with a degree of abstraction that prioritises the narrative of the journey over strict topographical accuracy. This print offers a view into the social history of Edo-period Japan, documenting the intersection of commerce, travel, and local identity along one of the country's most important thoroughfares.
