A detailed 1580 drawing by Frans Pourbus the Elder, capturing King Nebuchadnezzar in a moment of military command.
This drawing by Frans Pourbus the Elder, dated 1580, depicts the biblical figure of King Nebuchadnezzar. The composition is contained within an oval format, a common choice for allegorical or narrative works during the late sixteenth century. The artist employs a combination of pen and brown ink with wash to define the muscular form of the monarch, who sits in a commanding posture. His gaze is directed towards the distant, burning city of Jerusalem, rendered with economical strokes in the background.
Pourbus demonstrates a clear interest in classical motifs, evident in the king's armour and the discarded military equipment at his feet. The figure is draped in heavy fabric, which provides a sense of volume and weight to the composition. The use of brown wash creates a range of shadows that model the anatomy of the king, while the lighter areas of the paper are reserved for highlights. The inclusion of grapes and vessels in the foreground adds a layer of symbolic detail, often associated with the spoils of war or the decadence of power.
As a member of a prominent family of painters from Bruges, Pourbus the Elder was well-versed in the stylistic conventions of the Northern Renaissance. This work reflects the period's fascination with historical subjects and the technical precision required for preparatory drawings. The line quality is deliberate and controlled, showing the artist's ability to balance anatomical accuracy with the dramatic requirements of the narrative. The work remains a fine example of sixteenth-century draughtsmanship, capturing a moment of calculated aggression through the figure of the king.
