A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting travellers resting by the river at Kawasaki station on the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a scene at Kawasaki, a station along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. The composition focuses on travellers resting by the water, with a horse standing centrally as a pack animal. A boat traverses the river in the background, providing a sense of scale and movement against the stillness of the shore. Hokusai employs a restrained colour palette, using muted greens, ochre, and soft pinks to define the figures and the environment.
The print belongs to the Ukiyo-e tradition, which flourished during the Edo period. These works often documented the daily lives of common people, including merchants, pilgrims, and travellers. Hokusai demonstrates his ability to capture human activity with economy of line, focusing on the posture of the seated figures and the texture of the horse. The use of flat colour planes and clear outlines is characteristic of the woodblock printing techniques of the era, where each colour required a separate carved block.
Kawasaki was a significant stop on the Tokaido route, often associated with the crossing of the Rokugo River. Hokusai presents a quiet moment of respite, contrasting the arduous nature of travel with the calm atmosphere of the riverbank. The inclusion of traditional Japanese garments and travel gear provides historical detail regarding the period. The print reflects the interest in travel and geography that became popular among the urban population of Edo. By documenting these specific locations, Hokusai contributed to the visual record of the Japanese road system, which remained a subject of fascination for artists and the public alike. This work offers a glimpse into the social fabric of early nineteenth-century Japan, where the journey was as much a part of the cultural experience as the destination itself.
