A precise topographical drawing of Kasteel Ter Eem by Dutch artist Jacobus Stellingwerff, rendered in pen and ink with grey wash.
This topographical study by Jacobus Stellingwerff depicts Kasteel Ter Eem, a fortified residence located near Baarn in the Netherlands. Stellingwerff was a prolific draughtsman known for his systematic documentation of Dutch castles, churches, and manor houses during the early eighteenth century. His work provides a valuable record of architectural structures that have since been altered or destroyed.
The drawing employs a precise pen-and-ink technique, supplemented by subtle grey washes to define form and shadow. The composition is balanced, presenting the castle from a slightly elevated perspective that allows for a clear view of its defensive features, including the crenellated towers and the gatehouse. The artist focuses on the structural integrity of the building, using clean lines to delineate the masonry and the distinct rooflines of the towers. The surrounding foliage is rendered with loose, gestural strokes, providing a soft contrast to the rigid geometry of the architecture.
Stellingwerff’s approach is characteristic of the period's interest in local history and regional geography. Rather than seeking to idealise the subject, he prioritises clarity and accuracy, making this piece a primary source for architectural historians. The inclusion of the title 'Ter Eem' at the base of the drawing follows the standard practice for his topographical series, which were often intended for inclusion in larger collections or atlases. The muted palette, dominated by sepia tones and grey washes, maintains a focus on the structural details of the castle. This print offers a glimpse into the Dutch countryside as it appeared three centuries ago, capturing the quiet dignity of a site that held a specific place in the regional history of the Utrecht province.
