A traditional Kalighat painting depicting the Hindu deity Kartikeya mounted on his peacock, rendered in the bold, expressive style of nineteenth-century Kolkata.
This work depicts Kartikeya, the Hindu deity of war, rendered in the distinctive style of the Kalighat school of painting. Originating in the nineteenth century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata, these paintings were produced by itinerant artists known as patuas. They catered to pilgrims and urban residents, offering accessible depictions of deities, mythological figures, and contemporary social scenes.
The figure of Kartikeya is presented with the characteristic bold, sweeping lines and simplified forms that define the Kalighat aesthetic. The deity is shown seated upon his mount, the peacock, which is depicted with a stylised, rounded body. The artist employs a limited palette, using flat washes of colour to define the deity's form and his ornate jewellery. The figure wears a traditional hat and is adorned with multiple necklaces, reflecting the influence of both classical Indian iconography and the changing fashion of the colonial era.
Kalighat paintings are noted for their rapid execution, designed to be sold quickly to visitors. The artists often used inexpensive paper and locally sourced pigments. Despite the speed of production, the works possess a strong sense of character and rhythmic line. The focus remains on the essential features of the subject, stripping away unnecessary detail to create a clear, iconic image. This particular print captures the essence of the deity through a blend of traditional religious symbolism and the folk-art sensibilities of the period. The composition is balanced, with the peacock providing a stable base for the upright figure of the god. The use of colour is deliberate, with the deep blue of the peacock contrasting against the warm, yellow tones of the deity's skin, creating a visual harmony that is typical of the genre.
