A sixteenth-century etching by Léon Davent depicting Jupiter observing the destruction caused by Phaeton, based on Ovid's Metamorphoses.
This etching by Léon Davent depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, specifically the aftermath of Phaeton's disastrous attempt to drive the chariot of the sun. The composition shows Jupiter, the king of the gods, observing the scorched earth and ruined architecture from the heavens. The work is associated with the School of Fontainebleau, a group of artists active in France during the mid-sixteenth century who were known for their refined, mannerist approach to classical subjects.
Davent employs a precise etching technique to render the desolate scene. The central focus is a ruined temple, its dome partially collapsed, surrounded by debris and barren trees. The figure of Jupiter appears in the upper left, seated upon a cloud, surveying the destruction below. The inclusion of Latin and French text at the bottom of the print provides context for the narrative, identifying the scene as Jupiter visiting the site of the fires caused by Phaeton. The print reflects the period's interest in classical mythology and the integration of text with visual imagery.
As a practitioner within the circle of the School of Fontainebleau, Davent often collaborated with other artists, including Léonard Thiry, whose name appears in the inscription as the inventor of the composition. The print demonstrates the technical skill required for etching during this era, with clear line work defining the architectural forms and the atmospheric quality of the sky. The paper shows signs of age, including foxing and marginal wear, which are characteristic of sixteenth-century prints. This piece offers a glimpse into the artistic output of the French Renaissance, where mythological themes were frequently adapted for print media to reach a wider audience of collectors and scholars interested in classical antiquity.
