A formal eighteenth-century engraving by Simon Henri Thomassin, depicting the sculptor Jean Thierry with his tools and a classical statue.
This engraving by Simon Henri Thomassin depicts the French sculptor Jean Thierry. The work is based on a painting by Nicolas de Largillière, as indicated by the inscription 'N. Largilliere pinx' at the base of the plate. Thomassin, a skilled engraver of the period, captures the sitter with the formal gravity expected of an academic portrait from the early eighteenth century.
Jean Thierry is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing the elaborate periwig characteristic of the era. His attire includes a cravat and a coat with detailed button work. In his right hand, he holds a modelling tool, a clear reference to his profession as a sculptor. Beneath his hand, a sculpted head serves as a secondary attribute of his craft. In the background, a classical statue is positioned on a pedestal, further reinforcing his identity as a practitioner of the fine arts. The composition is balanced, utilising the conventions of portraiture to convey the status of the subject as a sculptor to the French and Spanish royal courts.
Thomassin employs precise line work to render the textures of the fabric, the curls of the wig, and the subtle modelling of the face. The engraving demonstrates the technical proficiency required to translate the tonal qualities of an oil painting into the monochromatic medium of print. The inscription at the bottom identifies Thierry as a native of Lyon and a professor at the Académie Royale, providing historical context for his professional standing. This print offers a clear view into the visual culture of the French Baroque, where portraiture functioned as a means to document the lives and achievements of notable figures within the artistic establishment.
