A detailed 1840 engraving by Eugen Eduard Schäffer, depicting an allegorical scene of Christianity introducing the fine arts to Germany.
This engraving by Eugen Eduard Schäffer reproduces the monumental fresco by Philipp Veit, originally commissioned for the Städel Museum in Frankfurt. The work belongs to the Nazarene movement, a group of German Romantic painters who sought to return to the aesthetic and spiritual purity of the Italian Renaissance. The composition functions as an allegory, depicting the arrival of Christian faith as the catalyst for artistic development within the Germanic lands.
At the centre, a female figure representing Christianity stands as the primary source of inspiration, holding a palm branch and a book. She is surrounded by various figures who embody the diverse disciplines of the arts, including architecture, painting, and sculpture. The scene is set within a wooded environment, suggesting a transition from a primitive state to one of cultural refinement. The figures are rendered with clear, precise contours, reflecting the Nazarene preference for linear clarity over painterly effects. The surrounding border features medallions containing portraits of historical figures, adding a scholarly dimension to the print.
Schäffer, a skilled engraver, translates Veit's original fresco into a monochrome medium with great technical control. He employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the drapery of the garments, the textures of the natural surroundings, and the subtle modelling of the human forms. The print serves as a record of the mid-nineteenth-century German interest in historical narrative and the moral purpose of art. It captures the didactic spirit of the era, where visual culture was intended to educate the viewer on the origins of national identity and the civilising influence of religious tradition. The work remains a representative example of the graphic output associated with the Städel Institute during this period.
