A 1663 architectural study by Pieter Jansz. Post, featuring a decorative design for a state yacht interior with maritime motifs.
This drawing by Pieter Jansz. Post, dated 1663, depicts a design for the interior decoration of a state yacht. Post, a Dutch architect and painter, was known for his contributions to the Dutch Classicist style. This specific work demonstrates the application of maritime iconography within a formal, decorative framework.
The composition focuses on a central panel featuring two crossed tridents, symbols associated with Neptune, which reflect the maritime context of the vessel. The design incorporates elaborate acanthus leaf scrolls and swags, rendered with a combination of ink lines and muted watercolour washes. The upper section includes architectural elements, such as pilasters and caryatid-like figures, which provide a sense of structure to the ornate carving. The use of gold and grey tones suggests the intended materials, likely gilded wood against a painted or panelled surface.
As a preparatory study, the drawing provides insight into the meticulous planning required for the outfitting of seventeenth-century Dutch state vessels. These yachts were not merely functional transport but served as symbols of status and authority for the Dutch Republic. The precision of the line work and the balanced arrangement of the decorative motifs indicate the high level of craftsmanship expected in such commissions. The inclusion of handwritten annotations at the top of the sheet confirms its purpose as a working document for artisans or builders. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of naval architecture and the decorative arts during the Dutch Golden Age, showing how classical motifs were adapted for the confined, specialised spaces of a ship's interior.
