A refined illustration by Heorhiy Narbut for 'The Song of Roland', featuring a medieval knight in a flat, heraldic style.
Heorhiy Narbut was a central figure in the Ukrainian graphic arts movement during the early twentieth century. This illustration, created for the medieval epic 'The Song of Roland', demonstrates his mastery of silhouette and line. Narbut drew significant inspiration from historical manuscripts, heraldry, and early printed books. His approach to composition is deliberately flat, prioritising decorative clarity over three-dimensional perspective.
The scene depicts a mounted knight in full armour, accompanied by his retinue. The figures are rendered with precise, calligraphic outlines that define their forms against the muted background. The knight wears a distinctive helmet topped with a bird motif, a detail that reflects Narbut's interest in medieval iconography. The horses and riders are arranged in a rhythmic, procession-like formation, echoing the aesthetic of illuminated manuscripts.
Narbut utilised a restrained palette, relying on earthy tones and muted primary colours to maintain the historical character of the work. The inclusion of flags and heraldic shields adds to the sense of period authenticity. The architectural element in the background, a simplified castle, provides a sense of place without distracting from the primary subjects. This work is characteristic of the artist's ability to synthesise historical research with a modern graphic sensibility. His work remains a primary example of the revival of national motifs within the context of the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) circle. The clean lines and balanced composition make this an excellent example of early twentieth-century book illustration, where the page layout and the image function as a unified design.
