A 1962 etching by Dutch artist Sipke Huismans, featuring gestural, abstract lines and circular forms that explore the boundaries of graphic expression.
This etching by Dutch artist Sipke Huismans, titled Het oor, demonstrates the experimental approach to printmaking that defined his early career. Created in 1962, the work reflects a period of exploration into gestural abstraction and the physical possibilities of the etching plate. Huismans employs a spontaneous, almost frantic line quality, where the needle appears to dance across the surface, creating a web of intersecting marks that defy traditional representation.
The composition is dominated by a series of concentric, circular forms that suggest the anatomical structure of an ear, though these shapes are quickly subsumed by a chaotic network of straight lines, scribbles, and pseudo-textual elements. The artist makes use of the plate's texture, allowing the ink to catch in the burr and scratches, which adds a tactile quality to the final print. The lower portion of the image features dense, illegible scrawls that mimic handwriting, grounding the abstract energy of the upper section in a more grounded, graphic reality.
Huismans, born in 1937, has long been associated with the Dutch avant-garde scene. His work often bridges the gap between structured graphic design and the raw, unmediated expression of the subconscious. In this piece, the viewer is invited to observe the tension between the deliberate, circular geometry and the surrounding disorder. The monochromatic palette emphasises the stark contrast between the dark, bitten lines and the clean, white paper, forcing a focus on the rhythm and velocity of the artist's hand. This print is a clear example of the mid-century interest in deconstructing form, where the process of creation is as visible as the final result.
