A detailed etching by Petrus Johannes Arendzen depicting a shepherd leading a flock of sheep into a barn, capturing the quiet atmosphere of the Dutch countryside.
This etching by Petrus Johannes Arendzen captures a quiet, rural scene characteristic of the Hague School. The composition focuses on a shepherd guiding a flock of sheep toward the shelter of a wooden barn. The artist employs fine, hatched lines to build texture in the wool of the animals and the weathered timber of the structure. The soft, atmospheric light suggests the late afternoon, a common temporal setting for artists of this period who sought to document the daily rhythms of agrarian life.
Arendzen was a skilled printmaker, known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the medium of etching. His work often reflects the interest of his contemporaries in the Dutch countryside, prioritising mood and light over sharp detail. The inclusion of a small, detached sketch of a head in the lower margin provides a glimpse into the artist's process, revealing the preparatory nature of such prints. The scene is devoid of artifice, presenting the interaction between the shepherd and the flock with directness and technical precision.
The Hague School, to which Arendzen was connected, moved away from the highly polished finish of earlier academic painting. Instead, these artists favoured a more painterly approach, often using a muted palette to convey the damp, grey skies of the Netherlands. This print demonstrates that sensitivity to tone, using the contrast between the dark barn and the lighter field to create depth. It is a study of form and shadow, capturing a moment of stillness before the flock enters the enclosure. The work remains a fine example of late nineteenth-century Dutch printmaking, documenting a way of life that was already beginning to change during the industrialisation of the era.
