A 1838 commemorative lithograph by Johannes Philippus Lange, marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of King Willem I's reign in the Netherlands.
This lithographic print by Johannes Philippus Lange commemorates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the reign of King Willem I of the Netherlands. Produced in 1838, the work functions as a formal memento of the monarch's accession, which occurred on 30 November 1813. The composition is structured as a broadside, a common format for nineteenth-century commemorative ephemera, featuring a central portrait of the King in military uniform, complete with medals and epaulettes.
The portrait is framed by an extensive text layout, which provides a detailed historical narrative of the House of Orange. The surrounding columns of typography serve to contextualise the monarch within a long lineage of Dutch leadership, tracing the history of the House of Orange-Nassau. The inclusion of a crown motif above the portrait reinforces the royal theme, while the dense, structured columns of text reflect the nineteenth-century preference for combining portraiture with biographical documentation.
Johannes Philippus Lange, a Dutch artist and lithographer, utilised the technical capabilities of the lithographic process to create a clear, legible document that could be widely distributed. The print is characteristic of the period's interest in national identity and royal iconography. The monochromatic palette and the precise, academic rendering of the King's features demonstrate the standard approach to portraiture in the early nineteenth century. This piece offers a specific view into the political culture of the Netherlands during the reign of Willem I, capturing the formalised public celebration of a quarter-century of rule. It remains a document of its time, providing insight into how royal authority was communicated and celebrated through printed media in the 1830s.
