A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting a travelling procession at the Hara station with Mount Fuji in the background.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Hara, a stop along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. The composition features a procession of travellers moving across the foreground, their figures rendered with the characteristic clarity of Hokusai's early nineteenth-century style. Behind them, the imposing silhouette of Mount Fuji rises, its peak partially obscured by atmospheric effects. The artist employs a balanced palette, using muted greens and soft pinks to define the terrain and sky, while the figures are dressed in garments that provide a sense of movement and social context.
Hokusai's approach to this series differs from the later, more famous depictions of the Tokaido by other masters. Here, the focus remains on the human element of travel, capturing the daily life of those traversing the route. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clean lines and a deliberate arrangement of forms that guide the eye from the foreground figures toward the distant mountain. The use of colour is restrained, allowing the graphic quality of the design to take precedence. This work offers a glimpse into the social history of Edo-period Japan, documenting the constant flow of people and goods along the nation's primary artery. It is a representative example of the artist's ability to synthesise human activity with the natural environment, maintaining a sense of order and proportion throughout the scene.
