A biblical scene by Camille Corot, depicting Hagar and Ishmael in a vast, arid wilderness, painted in 1835.
Camille Corot painted Hagar in the Wilderness in 1835, a work that demonstrates his early engagement with the tradition of historical and biblical subjects. The composition depicts the narrative from the Book of Genesis, where Hagar and her son Ishmael are cast out into the desert. Corot places the figures in the lower right foreground, where Hagar kneels in a gesture of despair while her son lies exhausted on the rocky ground. Above them, a small, ethereal angel appears in the sky, offering divine intervention.
The setting is a vast, arid expanse characterised by rugged rock formations and sparse vegetation. Corot employs a palette of earthy ochres, muted greens, and soft blues to capture the harsh light of the desert. The treatment of the terrain reflects his training in the classical tradition, yet the atmospheric quality of the sky and the handling of light suggest the direction his later work would take. The contrast between the monumental, solid forms of the boulders and the delicate, almost translucent figure of the angel creates a tension between the physical reality of the wilderness and the spiritual nature of the event.
This painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1835. It represents a period in Corot's career when he sought to reconcile the rigorous demands of academic history painting with his own developing interest in the observation of nature. The figures are integrated into the environment, rather than standing apart from it, which was a departure from the more rigid conventions of the time. The work remains a clear example of how Corot balanced narrative requirements with his personal approach to light and atmosphere, resulting in a scene that feels both grounded in physical space and imbued with a sense of quiet, dramatic isolation.
