A delicate pencil study of a grazing cow by French master Camille Corot, featuring an additional sketch of a cow's head.
This pencil study by Camille Corot captures the quiet observation of rural life that defined much of his output. The primary subject is a cow in profile, depicted in a grazing posture with its head lowered towards the ground. Corot employs a light, fluid line to define the animal's form, prioritising the gesture and the weight of the creature over rigid anatomical precision. The sketch is marked by a sense of immediacy, characteristic of an artist who frequently worked directly from nature.
In the upper right corner, Corot includes a secondary study of a cow's head. This addition provides insight into his working method, where he often returned to specific motifs to refine his understanding of form and expression. The presence of the 'Vente Corot' stamp in the lower left corner indicates that this sheet remained in the artist's studio until after his death, when it was included in the posthumous sale of his collection. Such sketches were rarely intended for public display, yet they offer a clear view of the artist's technical approach.
The paper retains a warm, aged tone, which complements the soft graphite marks. Corot's ability to suggest volume and movement with minimal strokes is evident here. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the animal forms without extraneous background detail. This work serves as a record of the artist's engagement with the pastoral subjects that populated the French countryside during the mid-nineteenth century. It remains a representative example of the preparatory drawings that informed his larger, more finished compositions.
