A powerful section of the Dartmouth College mural cycle, this work critiques academic detachment through the imagery of skeletal figures in a fiery setting.
Gods of the Modern World is a section of the larger mural cycle titled The Epic of American Civilization, located at Dartmouth College. José Clemente Orozco painted this work during his time in the United States. The composition depicts a group of skeletal figures dressed in academic regalia, standing before a background of flames. These figures represent the sterility of traditional education and the detachment of intellectuals from the realities of human suffering.
In the foreground, a skeletal woman gives birth to a skeletal infant, surrounded by piles of books and glass jars containing foetuses. This imagery critiques the academic obsession with dead knowledge and the preservation of history at the expense of living progress. The colour palette is dominated by intense reds and oranges, which contrast with the cool, grey tones of the skeletons and the books. The brushwork is expressive and heavy, reflecting the urgency of the artist's social commentary.
Orozco was a member of the Mexican Muralist movement, which sought to create public art that addressed political and social issues. Unlike his contemporaries who often focused on revolutionary optimism, Orozco maintained a more cynical view of human institutions. This mural remains a powerful critique of the ivory tower, questioning the utility of academic systems that remain indifferent to the cycles of life and death. The integration of the physical architecture of the room into the mural design is a characteristic feature of his work, forcing the viewer to confront the painted figures directly within their own space.
