A traditional Kalighat painting depicting the goddesses Lakshmi and Sarasvati, rendered with the bold lines and flat colour characteristic of nineteenth-century Kolkata.
This work originates from the Kalighat school of painting, a tradition that emerged in the nineteenth century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. These paintings were produced by itinerant artists known as patuas, who created accessible, mass-produced images for pilgrims and visitors to the city. The style is defined by bold, sweeping brushstrokes, minimal shading, and a focus on clear, iconic forms.
The composition depicts Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Sarasvati, the goddess of knowledge, standing side by side. Lakshmi is rendered in a warm, golden hue, holding a lotus, while Sarasvati is depicted in a cooler tone, playing the veena. Both figures are adorned with traditional jewellery and garments, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the period. The artists utilised a limited palette of mineral pigments, often applied to inexpensive mill-made paper. The figures are placed upon stylised lotus pedestals, a common motif in Hindu iconography.
Kalighat paintings are noted for their ability to blend traditional religious subjects with contemporary social commentary. While this piece focuses on mythological figures, the technique remains consistent with the broader output of the school, which favoured fluid lines and a flat, decorative approach to space. The lack of complex perspective or background detail ensures that the viewer focuses entirely on the deities. This print captures the essence of a specific moment in Indian art history, where traditional religious themes met the demands of a growing urban market. The work remains a clear example of the visual language developed by the patuas, who adapted their skills from scroll painting to single-sheet compositions suitable for framing or collection.
