Ralph Albert Blakelock is recognised for his highly individual approach to painting, which often involved the application of multiple layers of pigment, followed by scraping and re-applying paint to achieve a specific surface texture. Ghost Dance (The Vision of Life) exemplifies his interest in the atmospheric qualities of the American West, filtered through a subjective, dreamlike lens. The composition is dominated by dark, silhouetted forms of trees that frame a central, glowing clearing. Within this space, ghostly, indistinct figures appear to gather, their forms rendered in warm, golden tones that contrast with the surrounding gloom.
Blakelock often worked in isolation, developing a style that prioritised mood and light over precise topographical detail. His technique of building up the surface creates a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the scene.
