A detailed 1822 etching by Jacobus Wijsman depicting the Amsterdam East India Company warehouse shortly before its collapse.
This etching by Jacobus Wijsman documents the Oost-Indisch Zeemagazijn, or East India Company warehouse, in Amsterdam shortly before its collapse in 1822. The print captures the imposing scale of the structure, which served as a central hub for the Dutch East India Company. The building is rendered with precise architectural detail, showing the repetitive window patterns and the central cupola that defined its silhouette against the Amsterdam skyline.
In the foreground, the artist includes small figures near the water, providing a sense of scale to the massive warehouse. The composition is balanced and symmetrical, reflecting the orderly nature of Dutch maritime infrastructure during the early nineteenth century. The water in the foreground is depicted with subtle horizontal lines, suggesting the calm surface of the canal. The sky contains soft, rounded cloud formations that add a sense of atmosphere to the scene without distracting from the primary subject.
This work functions as a historical record of a structure that was lost to structural failure. The inscription at the bottom provides specific context, noting the date of the observation as 13 April 1822. Wijsman, a Dutch artist active during this period, utilised the etching medium to produce clear, reproducible images that were often circulated to inform the public about urban changes and events. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency required to capture complex architectural forms through line work and shading. It remains a valuable visual source for historians studying the maritime history of Amsterdam and the physical transformation of the city's waterfront. The print is executed in a monochromatic palette, typical of the period's graphic output, focusing on clarity and documentation rather than expressive colour.
